Define the terms SUSPENSE and FORESHADOWING.
With your small group, find four examples of suspense. Write the examples as direct quotes on your WIKI page. Add the page number.

In a well-written paragraph, explain why your group chose these examples based on the definitions of suspense and foreshadowing.

Suspense- A feeling of anxiety and excitement or uncertainty about what might happen in the future
Foreshadowing- A warning of what might happen in the future
Examples of Suspense:

Mrs. Rodgers turned to go. Her feet moved noiselessly over the ground. She drifted from the room like a shadow. p.30
She was faintly disturbed. Everything-somehow-was a little queer. p.30
Down the steep track into the village a car was coming. A car so fantastically powerful, so superlatively beautiful that it had all the nature of an apparition. p.24

Our group chose the "And after-?" part because it filled your body with excitement of what will happen in the future to Anthony Martson. It could mean that Anthony Martson is soon to die. When Mrs. Rodgers left room after talking to Vera could be another feeling of suspense because Mrs. Rodgers is very quiet when she walks and she looks very suspicious. Another feeling of suspense was at the part when Vera thought to herself that everything-somehow-was a little queer. This fills your body with suspense and excitement because you want to find out what will happen next. When Anthony Martson was driving down the road into the village was a feeling of suspense because you wanted to know who was driving the car.
An example of foreshadowing is when Fred Narracott thought that a person in the group had something to do with the pictures. Our group chose this because it sets a conflict between two characters that could lead to disagreement later in the book. Another example was when Fred Narracott thought that going to Indian Island was queer business. This could be an example of foreshadowing because ten random people were chosen to go to Indian Island. When Vera thought about what Mrs. Rodgers was afraid of is an example of foreshadowing. Our group chose this because we think that Mrs. Rodgers is hiding something that could get her in trouble in the future if she told. The ten little indians poem is another example of foreshadowing. This is an example of foreshadowing because there are ten people on the island, and in the poem, all ten indians die.
Ryan- Your group did an excellent job of choosing quotes and supporting them. A good mystery author uses these techniques skillfully which then makes the reader absorbed in the novel. Check spelling errors. Words underlined in red usually need spelling changes. Pay attention to those details. Mrs. M 12-7-12
